We just had grilled cheese sandwiches and hot soup for lunch so, yes, it’s a good Friday. Even with full bellies, we’ve rounded up some great articles chock-full of wisdom in this Weekly Rewind.

Writer Words to Live By

Writing engaging and riveting content for blogs, social media posts, press releases or newsletters is what all PR pros strive to do. However, mastering the balance between writing precisely while still telling a good story can sometimes be difficult. PR Daily lists out three famous writers’ advice to follow whenever you find yourself in a rut.

  1. Ernest Hemingway: “Write drunk; edit sober.” Perhaps, don’t keep a bottle of wine at your desk, but turning off that critical voice in your head is crucial.
  2. Elmore Leonard: “I try to leave out the parts people skip.” Attention spans are shrinking, and your audience won’t read long, boring copy.
  3. Margaret Atwood: “A word after a word after a word is power.” As a strong writer, you have the power to create and share meaningful messages for your clients.

Some Insta-Good Facts

Do you find yourself wasting countless hours scrolling through your Instagram feed? Or spend ten minutes trying to capture that perfect picture and then ten more minutes to find the perfect filter? If so, you might be Instagram obsessed, and you’ll want to check out this infographic from WebsiteBuilder.org revealing 139 facts and stats about Instagram.

There’s some amazing information in here! For example, now we know the best time to post is Wednesday at 5 p.m. and the top brands post four to five times a week. Also, fun fact — the top five hashtags are #love, #instagood, #photooftheday, #tbt and #beautiful.

Go for the Commercials….

Do you have Super Bowl plans? We don’t care much for either the Patriots or the Falcons, but we do care about the commercials ― those precious 30 to 90 seconds companies have to influence us to buy this car or drink that beer. Adweek pulled together a list of the 15 ads you don’t want to miss. It’s always fun to speculate which PR agencies are either going to walk in high-fiving on Monday and which ones are going to have a painful day flagging and responding to outraged social posts.

And Stay for the Tweets

A recent report from the Video Advertising Bureau found that “87% of trending topics on Twitter are generated from audiences tweeting as they watch a live TV show.” PR Week sat down with Twitter’s head of brand strategy, Alex Josephson, to get his advice on how advertisers should join in on Sunday’s Super Bowl conversations and how to get ahead of any negativity. We like his advice on “preparing to be spontaneous!”
