Instagram Algorithm
Instagram recently announced it’s adding an algorithm that will reorder pictures and videos on users’ feeds based on their interests, instead of posting them chronologically. For regular users, this makes it easier to double-tap a best friend’s selfie before she gets offended. Businesses, however, may have to put a little more work into their Instagram feeds. Because algorithms tend to create a bubble of familiarity for users, they make it more difficult for brands to reach new audiences. Goodbye, organic social media impressions. Hello, paid advertisements.
Madness, Indeed
Speaking of capitalizing, as the saying goes, “too much of anything can ruin you.” That lesson was hammered home for the NCAA this week as it’s currently investigating how the full March Madness bracket was leaked online before it was officially announced on CBS’ Selection Sunday show. College basketball fans were not happy to hear that the once 30-minute reveal segment had been extended to a two-hour special filled with fluff and commercials. Perhaps that’s what led to the picture of the bracket being leaked on Twitter 50 minutes into the show. Impatient sports fans rejoiced, but CBS and the NCAA were not as thrilled. The real MVP here will be whoever can leak a picture of the winning bracket directly into our inbox. Thanks in advance.
And Then There Were Three..
Marco Rubio officially dropped out of the presidential race this week after losing the primary in his home state of Florida. Rubio is the ninth candidate to leave the race since the first primary, leaving John Kasich, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz to battle it out for the republican nomination. In related news, the GOP has cancelled next week’s debate due to the fact that even the candidates are tired of arguing. There’s something everyone can relate to.
Reunited and it Feels so Good
Puppies make everything better, just ask the dog featured in our favorite video of the week. The Marin Humane Society in California shared this video showing a terrified dog cowering in the corner after being surrendered to the shelter, but soon replacing her fear with all-encompassing joy as she is reunited with her puppies. I’m not crying, you are.
PR in ALL THE THINGS
Regardless of the industry, it’s easy to develop a habit at work that tends to follow us outside of the office. However, if a dying phone battery is the bane of your existence or you use lingo like “follow up” and “brainstorm” on a normal basis, you might work in public relations.
