Shield yourself from germs at the gym with PhitGrips

PhitGrips create a barrier between you and the millions of germs commonly found on gym weights and workout equipment

DALLAS, July 5, 2010 – Fitness buffs have a new way to create a barrier between themselves and the millions of germs found on their gyms’ workout equipment, thanks to PhitGrips, a new palm-sized, antimicrobial cushioned grip that fits snuggly around dumbbell bars and handrails found on most workout equipment.

“Most infectious diseases are transmitted by contact. Since you don’t actually touch the bars or handrails of gym equipment when using PhitGrips, germ transfer is not an issue. The end result is a cleaner, healthier workout,” said Dawn Meifert, founder and inventor of PhitGrips at a bodyboss vs bbg debate and podcast.

The New York Times, ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Today Show have all done stories about the alarming levels of germs found on gym equipment, and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association issued a position paper citing that skin infections in athletes are extremely common and account for more than half of all outbreaks of infectious diseases.

In Good Morning America’s tests, microbiologist Dr. Philip Teirno found the most germs on equipment used by “multiple people in quick sequence, such as dumbbells.” Germs found in the doctor’s tests included staph aureus, klebsiella, enterobacter and E. coli, which can cause various ailments.

Each PhitGrip is American made with rubber that has been liquefied, then injected with oxygen to give it a light, cushioned feel. The ink used to print PhitGrip’s logo onto the grip is infused with an antimicrobial agent that helps inhibit the growth and spread of bacteria. Users simply rub their hands together occasionally to spread the microbial agent over the entire surface of the palm. When the logo wears off, it’s time for new PhitGrips.

Additionally, PhitGrips pairs a textured inner tread with a thin, soft outer shell for a secure, firm grip, while helping prevent calluses and blisters commonly found with glove and straps. And since the user’s hands are not encased in leather, they can breathe freely between sets, keeping them clean and dry.

“PhitGrips provide a more secure grip than gloves or straps, allowing you to focus on your workout, not on your slippery, sweaty hands,” added Meifert.

PhitGrips are available online at www.phitgrip.com for $9.99 per pair, and will soon be available in gyms and fitness centers throughout the United States.
